CHAPTER 6
Klaus Fuchs was waiting on the platform, reading Neues Deutschland. Martinâs first impulse was to duck, but Klaus had looked up and seen him, so there was no avoiding a meeting. A gray day, overcast, with the promise of drizzle, a morning alone to think, not field more questions on the train.
âBack to Berlin?â Klaus said. âA short visit.â
âReally just to see the place. Stefan wanted me to meet some of the others. Donât let me interrupt. You probably have work,â he said, nodding to the briefcase at Klausâs feet.
âYes, but later. Right now Iâm reading you, in fact.â His watery eyes lively behind his glasses, making a joke.
âAh, the interview. They ran it. Well, donât believe everything you read.â
The eyes clouding now, not a joke. âBut itâs Neues Deutschland.â
âHow do I sound?â
âAn idealist. And a good socialist. Itâs true, no?â
âIt must be, if itâs there.â Still trying to be light.
Klaus looked at him, not sure how to take this. âItâs whatâs been agreed. Itâs important for Party discipline, for everyone to follow whatâs agreed.â
âCould I have a look?â
Fuchs handed him the paper.
âI suppose it could be worse,â Martin said, giving it a quick scan. âNewspapers. You never sound like yourself. Donât you think?â
âI donât know. I donât give interviews.â
âNot even when you arrived? You must have. It was news.â
âThe Party requested it, yes.â He paused, hesitating. âYou donât mind a criticism? Itâs true what you say here, the general outline. But also a little misleading. When you wereâpassing information, they already had it. I gave them everything. You were a confirmation. So thereâs no reason for these feelings, any guilt. They already had everything. If you had never done it, it would have been the same.â
Martin looked at him, another scarecrow pose, rigid with conviction.
âI didnât know that. Why did they want me to do it, then?â A capital crime.
âTo make sure maybe. That it was accurate. But they already had it.â He took a step back. âYou had a pleasant visit?â Awkward, not used to small talk.
âVery. They put me up at the Dresdner. Quite a pile. I had no idea.â
âWhat?â Fuchs said, genuinely puzzled.
âThat there were such places here.â
âOh, places of luxury, you mean. Not so many. But ours are for the people, not businessmen and Nazis.â
Martin looked at him. Did he really believe this? A man of faith. First Luther, then the Party.
âHere comes the train,â Martin said, relieved. Or would they have to sit together all the way to Berlin? âAre you waiting for someone?â
âNo. Why?â
âThat man over there keeps looking at you. I thought maybeââ
Fuchs swiveled around, then turned back, embarrassed. âItâs for my protection,â he said.
âIs that why heâs so obvious? So everybody will know?â
âWe all have one at Rossendorf. For our protection. You donât mind if I do my work on the train?â He held up the briefcase. âItâs not polite, but I need to prepareââ
âOf course. Iâll finish this, if you donât mind.â He nodded to the paper. âSee what the Party line is today.
